Keep a freshly coated car dry for the first 12 to 48 hours and hold off shampooing it for 5 to 14 days. That range comes from manufacturer care guides, and it changes with the product. After that, hand wash every week or two with pH neutral shampoo and clean microfibre, and stay out of automatic brush washes.
Treat this ceramic coating aftercare guide as general advice. Cure times differ by product, and your detailer confirms the exact times for the coating used on the day.
How long does a ceramic coating take to cure?
There's no single number. It depends on the product. Two published examples:
- Gyeon tells owners of its Q² Mohs EVO coating to keep the surface out of direct sun and away from water for the first 12 hours. Its US site says to hold off washing or using strong detergents for the first 14 days.
- CARPRO's US care guide for CQUARTZ coatings says to keep the car free of water spots for 48 hours and not wash with soap for 5 days, unless you need to shift bugs.
Those are the makers' figures for their own products, not the times for your car. After a 10H ceramic coating from us, go by what your detailer tells you on the day.
The first hours and days
Dry is the whole job here. Park under cover if you can and switch off any sprinkler that reaches the driveway. CARPRO's guide warns against sprinkler and hard tap water on a coating.
If it gets rained on anyway, don't let the drops dry in the sun, because evaporating water leaves its minerals behind as spots. Blot the panel with a clean microfibre towel and tell your detailer.
Bird droppings can't wait for the cure period to end. Gtechniq Australia's customer care guide says to wash off droppings, bug splatter and tree sap as soon as possible because they can be highly corrosive, using plenty of clean water and no scrubbing. Soak the spot, then lift it away with a wet microfibre.
How do you wash a ceramic coated car?
After the cure period, a coated car is easier to wash than an uncoated one. Method still matters: Gtechniq Australia's guide blames scrubbing for almost all swirl marks.
- Work in the shade and rinse first. Hose off loose grit before anything touches the paint.
- Use pH neutral shampoo and two buckets. One holds the shampoo mix, the other clean water for rinsing the mitt. Gtechniq Australia adds a third bucket for the wheels.
- Start at the roof and work down. Wheels go last, with their own mitt, because brake dust is abrasive.
- Dry with a clean microfibre towel. Lay it on the panel and pull it towards you. No chamois, no rubbing.
Light dust between washes? A rinseless wash with plenty of clean microfibre towels does the job. Mud and grit need a hose first.
What to avoid on a coated car
- Automatic brush washes. The brushes can carry grit from the cars before yours.
- Harsh degreasers and strong acid or alkaline cleaners on the paint. Gyeon's care advice is short: pH neutral shampoo, avoid harsh chemicals.
- Abrasive polish and cutting compound. Polish works by removing a thin layer of whatever it touches. On a coated car, that layer is the coating.
- Wax. You don't need it. The coating already does that job, and each maker quoted above sells a compatible top-up spray if you want one.
How do I know the coating is still working?
Watch the water. On a healthy coating it pulls into tight, round beads and slides off when you rinse or drive.
Flat, lazy beading doesn't always mean the coating has gone. Gtechniq Australia's guide notes that the water-repelling effect can wear down while the protective layer is still there. Often it's road film, and a thorough wash brings the beads back. If not, have your detailer look at it.
When should you book a maintenance wash?
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| First 12 to 48 hours (your detailer confirms) | Keep it dry. Lift droppings with water only. |
| Until the cure period ends, 5 to 14 days in the guides above | No shampoo wash and no automatic wash. |
| Every 1 to 2 weeks after that | Hand wash with pH neutral shampoo. |
| When the beading drops off | Thorough wash. Detailer check if it doesn't return. |
| About once a year | Professional maintenance detail, as Gtechniq Australia recommends for its coatings. |
Short on time? Our Mini Detail is a snow foam hand wash with wheels, jambs, windows and tyres, from $89 at your home or workplace. It normally finishes with a spray wax sealant, so mention the coating when you book.
Frequently asked questions
How soon can I wash my car after a ceramic coating?
It depends on the coating. The manufacturer guides we checked range from 5 to 14 days before the first shampoo wash, with the car kept dry for the first 12 to 48 hours. Those are general figures. Follow the times your detailer gives you for the coating on your car.
What if it rains on a new ceramic coating?
Keep it out of the rain if you can. If it does get wet, blot it dry with a clean microfibre towel so the water can't dry into mineral spots, then let your detailer know.
Can a ceramic coated car go through an automatic car wash?
Avoid brush washes. The brushes can drag grit across the paint, and a thin coating won't shrug that off forever. Touchless washes are gentler but some use strong chemicals, so a hand wash with pH neutral shampoo is the safer habit.
